HISTORY

I have known the Hovawart for more than twenty years like the majority of breeders from a canine article on this race. 

Following this text, I wanted to see if this dog corresponded to our research (behavior, character, physical characteristics) :  family dog, good guard dog, not too noisy, good whit children, athletic.  After searching in vain for an exposition where one could see a subject, the one in Charleroi in Belgium brought  forth our initiation on this fantastic race.  After fifteen months of waiting our first Hovawart arrived from a famous breeding house in Switzerland. 

She was a pretty black and tan ball named Ilska du Moussilon.  She was educated with no problems and I was disconcerted with the facility of her learning compared to my Fox Terrier, who was overjoyed with such a formidable companion.  As fate decides,  Ilska at the age of two was run over by an automobile.  Our infinite sorrow and our desperation prevented us from taking on another one.  This was a mistake for our wound did not heal.  After some time we were contacted by Dr. Verlaguet who desired to create a club of Hovawart.  This was like a breath of fresh air and we found ourselves all excited.   We created a Club with the help of several people, themselves owners.  They were total strangers, the inexistence of a Club does not create relationships. 

At the same time a new companion came to join us, it was the grand-daughter of the first  (Arina Lemania Denges)  where her descendants no longer have to prove their physical and mental quality.

What comprises a good dog ?

It is a dog in good health with a balanced character.  Also our three females breeders are :     

• Exempt from Dysplasy  (A/B)

• Void of ocular defect

• Void of hypothyroide problems.  

• Possess a certificate in sociability (CSAU) or of TAN (National Aptitude Test propose by the race Club).  This exempt depicts that the dog is balanced, social and able to defend his master naturally.

• We have been breeding for almost ten years Hovawart with three females with different origins for a larger diversity.  The puppies are raise by our family at home with our three children and our cat Rikiki.

• We welcome many questions from families interested in our elegant and athletic race by a simple telephone call (at night) or by e-mail.  

STANDARDS

WORK

Our daughter Charlotte fervent adept of the race practises obedience (level 2)  with her dog Neige  (formerly a seeing eye dog).   The results are more or less good following the test, but the essential isn’t it to enjoy ourselves and to please ourselves and to have a good relationship with our dog.  I equally practise obedience with Orina (level 3).  As he looks at you with an eye filled with happiness that says « I am doing this for you ».

 There exists other very interesting disciplines which value the mental qualities of dogs (a dog can develop once he has the initiative of freedom) tracking, RCI, but also for us impractical as a result of the lack of proximity of any club.
